Cool your home in a heatwave with shutters

When the weather gets hot, most of us do the same thing – close the curtains, switch on a fan and hope the house doesn’t turn into a greenhouse by the afternoon.

What many people don’t realise is that your windows are one of the biggest reasons your home heats up in the first place. The good news is that indoor shutters can make a real difference.

While shutters are often chosen because they look great and offer excellent privacy, they’re also surprisingly effective at helping to keep your home cooler during the summer months.

Why do rooms get so hot?

Sunlight passing through your windows warms up your furniture, floors and walls. Once those surfaces have heated up, they slowly release that warmth back into the room, making it feel much hotter than it is outside.

South and west-facing rooms tend to be affected the most, especially during the afternoon when the sun is strongest.

How do shutters help?

Indoor shutters create an extra barrier between the glass and your room. By adjusting the louvres, you can block direct sunlight while still letting natural light into your home. At night, if it’s safe to do so, you can leave windows open and tilt the louvres to let air through as well.

If it’s particularly hot outside, simply closing the shutter panels during the hottest part of the day can help reduce the amount of heat entering your room.

The result is a room that feels more comfortable without needing to keep the curtains closed all day.

Are shutters better than curtains?

Curtains certainly help, but shutters give you much more control.

Rather than making the room dark, you can tilt the louvres to reduce glare and heat while still letting plenty of daylight in. You can also maintain your privacy without completely shutting yourself away from the outside world. As already mentioned, air flow at night is much easier with shutters compared to curtains, which block air flow when closed. So many of our customers tell us they spend less time adjusting blinds and curtains once their shutters are fitted.

They help reduce energy costs, too

Anything that helps stop your home overheating can reduce the need for fans or air conditioning. While every property is different, shutters help limit the amount of solar heat entering through your windows, meaning your home stays more comfortable naturally.

They’re also beneficial during the winter by adding another layer of insulation, making them a practical investment all year round. You can read more about saving energy and bill here.

Of course, staying cooler during the summer is only one of the many reasons people choose indoor shutters.

They also offer:

  • Excellent privacy without blocking all your natural light.
  • Adjustable light control throughout the day.
  • A timeless look that suits both traditional and modern homes.
  • Easy cleaning with no fabric to wash or cords to untangle.
  • Made-to-measure designs that are built to last.
