Do shutters add value to your house?

Installing shutters in your home is a big decision; they’re more expensive than other window coverings and last a long time, so it’s important to ensure you’re making the right choice for your home! When deciding, many customers wonder whether shutters add value to a house, as that is often a consideration for the future.

So, do shutters add value? The short answer is yes!

Why do shutters add home value?

There are several ways in which shutters can add value to your home, although this is not a guarantee.

  • Curb appeal – houses that look well presented sell for more; this is a fact. It is not just the structure of your home that buyers look for, but often the finishing touches such as nice paintwork, a tidy garden, and well-maintained windows. Shutters add a finishing touch to your home that can be see from outside, showing the care and investment you have put into the house before selling. Wooden plantation shutters are particularly stunning!
  • Energy efficiency – Buyers often ask about efficiency, working out the costs of living in your home. Things like draughty doors and windows are an issue that could lower the price a buyer is willing to pay, and so mitigating this is a great way to increase your selling potential. Adding shutters does increase energy efficiency, which can be a great selling point especially in older homes!
  • Increased security – no matter where your home is, security is highly valuable. Although not advertised as a security measure, plantation shutters do add an extra layer of security to windows by making them very difficult for an intruder to enter from outside when closed. By obscuring the view into the room, they make it more difficult to see the valuables you may have, decreasing the chances of your house being targeted in the first place. They also stop opportunists reaching through windows to grab things nearby.
  • Cost – the cost of shutters can be off-putting for some homeowners, but many haven’t considered the increased sale value from having them already installed. When looking to buy a home, shutters are a big plus as they have already been paid for, saving the buyer money on renovations and decoration.
