Best Materials for Bathroom & Kitchen Shutters

When it comes to choosing shutters for bathrooms and kitchens, one of the most common questions we’re asked is: “Which material is best?”  These are rooms where moisture, steam, and humidity are a daily reality — so it’s essential to select shutters that will stand the test of time while still looking stylish.

At Droitwich Shutters, we’ve been helping homeowners across Worcestershire and South Birmingham choose and fit the perfect shutters for over 20 years between us. With so many projects under our belt, and with our excellent reviews from happy customers, we know exactly what works best in bathrooms and kitchens.

Why Material Choice Matters in Wet or Humid Rooms

Unlike living rooms and bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens put shutters through tougher conditions:

  • Moisture and steam can warp or damage natural wood over time.
  • Temperature changes (from cooking or hot showers) can cause materials to expand or contract.
  • Ease of cleaning is more important in kitchens, where splashes and grease can build up.

That’s why material choice is key — and why not all shutters are created equal.

The Best Materials for Bathroom & Kitchen Shutters

Waterproof Polyvinyl (PVC) Shutters

For bathrooms and kitchens, waterproof polyvinyl shutters are the most reliable option. They are:

  • Completely resistant to water and steam
  • Durable and long-lasting
  • Easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth
  • Designed to look just like painted wood

These shutters give you all the style of classic plantation shutters without the risk of swelling or warping.

Which shutters to avoid

Composite or MDF Shutters (Not Recommended for Wet Areas)

In some rooms, MDF shutters are a cost-effective choice, but in bathrooms and kitchens, they simply don’t perform as well. Exposure to moisture can cause problems over time — which is why we generally advise against them in these areas.

Hardwood Shutters (Great for Dry Rooms, Less for Wet)

Hardwood shutters are beautiful and strong, making them ideal for living areas and bedrooms. However, in bathrooms and kitchens, the constant humidity can shorten their lifespan unless they’re in well-ventilated spaces.
